In a moment steeped in honor and humility, Ugyen Deepak, a renowned hairdresser from Trashigang, stood before His Majesty the King to receive the National Order of Merit (Silver). For Ugyen, he said, “I am deeply humbled and profoundly honored to have received this medal of recognition (National Order of Merit – Silver) from His Majesty the King. This distinction is not just a symbol of personal achievement but also a testament to His Majesty’s unwavering commitment to recognizing the contributions of His people no matter what their background or profession is. It is a testament to the King’s vision of inspiring citizens to strive for excellence in their chosen fields.”

Born in 1976 in Trashigang, Ugyen’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and an unwavering commitment to preserving his heritage. Raised in a family of skilled hairdressers, Ugyen is the 17th generation to carry forward this ancestral profession. “This occupation runs deep within my family lineage,” Ugyen shared. “Following in the footsteps of my father, I proudly continue this legacy, ensuring its perpetual vitality.”

From a young age, Ugyen was drawn to the art of hairstyling, fueled by an innate passion for beauty and craftsmanship. Determined to enhance his skills, he pursued formal training in hairstyling in Delhi, India, where he mastered techniques for both men’s and women’s styling.

His journey didn’t stop there. Recognizing his potential, His Majesty the King awarded him a scholarship to Bangkok, Thailand, where he specialized in facial treatments and Swedish massage. “I am immensely appreciative of this exceptional opportunity and the invaluable knowledge it has bestowed upon me,” Ugyen remarked with gratitude.

With over 30 years of experience, Ugyen has not only honed his craft but also elevated it to a revered art form. His salon stands as a testament to his dedication, offering exceptional services in a tranquil and hygienic environment.

“Indulge in an extraordinary experience at our salon,” Ugyen said. “We prioritize hygiene and sanitation, and as an added touch, we even provide complimentary coffee for your enjoyment. Come to us for extraordinary haircuts and styling, and discover why discerning individuals choose our salon.”

Ugyen Deepak’s journey has been far from easy. The profession he proudly represents was once viewed as a blue-collar job, subjected to societal prejudice. However, his unwavering dedication and the support of His Majesty have transformed this perception. Today, Ugyen stands as a symbol of resilience and excellence, inspiring countless others to embrace their passions.

One of Ugyen’s most significant contributions is his role as an instructor in the Desuup Program, a national initiative championed by His Majesty the King to empower citizens through skill development. Ugyen has trained multiple batches of aspiring professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to establish their salons.

“As a member of the esteemed Desuup family, I express my heartfelt appreciation to His Majesty for bestowing this incredible opportunity upon us,” Ugyen said. “Skill development programs like this foster entrepreneurship and empower individuals like myself.”

He said, “It is a once-in-a-lifetime investment with lifelong advantages. Their eagerness and commitment are palpable, and they find great joy in being part of this transformative journey.”

The training imparted under the Desuup Program is comprehensive, covering diverse aspects of beauty and hairstyling. From cutting and coloring techniques to skincare and salon management, Ugyen ensures his students are well-equipped to cater to a wide range of clientele.

“My ultimate objective is to equip the students with a comprehensive and versatile skill set, enabling them to excel in all facets of beauty and hairstyling,” he shared.

Ugyen’s vision extends beyond personal and professional success. He sees hairstyling as a vital profession that contributes to the nation’s economic engine. “This is a profession where an entrepreneur can start their livelihood and indirectly benefit our economy. If our neighboring countries can do it, why not us? The demand for this profession will always remain strong, unlike other businesses.”

Reflecting on his journey and the honor bestowed upon him, Ugyen remains deeply humbled. He said he owe this recognition to His Majesty’s deep belief in the innate potential of His citizenry.

“This shall inspire me to work harder and serve my country and people with sincerity for many years to come. His Majesty’s tireless devotion to the well-being and progress of our nation is a beacon of hope and a call to action for all of us,” he said.

As Ugyen continues to mentor aspiring professionals and serve his community, he remains steadfast in his pledge to uphold the values exemplified by His Majesty.

“I pledge to continue my endeavors with greater resolve, always keeping the welfare of our nation and people at the forefront. “Long live His Majesty the King, whose vision and compassion continue to shape the destiny of Bhutan and its people.”

In Ugyen Deepak’s journey, the threads of tradition, innovation, and service intertwine, creating a tapestry of inspiration. His story is not just about a hairdresser but about a man who turned his vocation into a calling, his passion into purpose, and his legacy into a source of national pride.
