Public transport: The answer to Thimphu’s nightmarish traffic jams

The problem of road traffic is getting nastier day by day in big cities of Bhutan, especially in Thimphu. In modern life we have to face with many problems one of which is traffic congestion becoming more serious by the day.

It has become a nightmare to the office goers, students, patients visiting hospital and individuals having appointments. Most of them are getting late to report in the morning and job seekers must be losing their chance at various interview calls being stuck at traffic jams.

Housewives/housemaids are waking early to pack lunch for school going children and office goers in the family as precious time is wasted in various traffic snarls across the capital which is only expected to get nastier.

Thimphu city is expanding but roads are not widened and there are no utility spaces. Managing Thimphu city has become a challenge. The number of cars keeps increasing. Roads in Thimphu city are under construction one after another and roads are diverted. People are confused and frustrated. Even there could be vehicle collisions.

The high volume of vehicles added with inadequate infrastructure and the irrational distribution of the development are main reasons for increasing traffic jams in the capital.

Distorted urbanization, the increase in population, and the increase in the number of vehicles are also one of the biggest factors causing traffic problems in city.

With the formation of crooked urbanization, the roads are not wide enough and not linear enough to provide traffic flow quickly. As a result, we see blocked roads, big queues, and angry drivers, office goers and students getting late.

The major cause leading to traffic congestion is the high number of vehicle which is spurred by the population and the development of economy. To solve this problem, the government should encourage people to use public transport or vehicles with small size such as bicycles or make taxi. Even the Parliament may pass the law restricting to the number of vehicles for each family.

The public transport such as bus and subway is not available and its quality is very bad. To cope with these difficulties, the government should make an investment in the traffic facilities, like introducing public transports with improved and convenient facilities.

In addition, it is useful to build overpasses wherever necessary as it also adds to the problem. Urban mobility app should be made to monitor traffic system and guide transport to their final destinations.

Apparently, the irrational distribution and the lack of planned urban infrastructure development have made the traffic state of affairs worse. To handle this situation, the government should allocate suitably for instance some schools, hospital or offices will be moved to the outskirt of city. People obey the traffic rules which will greatly ease the problem of traffic.

Finally, it’s high time to look for traffic congestion solution. With great effort from each individualist and government, our society will be definitely be cleaner and well organized.

We just have to make our priorities clear. And the priority this time is easing motor traffic in the capital city which is not at all a far-fetched order.
