Nganglam sees surge in Indian tourists

Nganglam, a growing town in southeastern Bhutan, is witnessing a significant rise in Indian tourists, driven by its convenient location near the border.

With easy access from Assam, India, the town has become a favoured destination for Indian traveler seeking a quick and affordable getaway into the country.

The increase in Indian tourists is proving beneficial for Nganglam local economy. Hotels, restaurants, and shops are experiencing higher footfall, especially during weekends and public holidays.

Many local businesses have also reported a steady rise in sales due to the influx of visitors.

Sonam Dorji, a local restaurant owner, said they are seeing more Indian tourists, especially families and friend groups.

“They enjoy trying Bhutanese dishes like ema datshi and momos. Our business has improved significantly,” he said.

The Nganglam border gate, with its simple entry procedures, plays a key role in attracting Indian tourists.

The friendly relations between Bhutan and India, combined with Bhutan policy allowing Indian citizens to travel without a visa, make Nganglam an accessible destination.

Authorities have made efforts to streamline travel procedures to ensure a smooth experience for visitors. Additionally, several Indian tour operators now offer affordable packages to Nganglam, boosting its appeal as a weekend getaway.

While businesses benefit from the increased tourist numbers, local residents also share their experiences and concerns regarding the town rapid tourism growth.

Karma Lhamo, a handicraft shop owner, said Indian tourists love buying our traditional woven fabrics and souvenirs. She said it is heartwarming to see them appreciate Bhutanese craftsmanship.

Tandin Wangchuk, a hotel manager, highlighted the positive impact on employment. “The rise in tourism has created more job opportunities for young people in Nganglam. We now have more staff at our hotels and restaurants to cater to the growing demand,” he said.

However, some residents expressed concerns about the poor town infrastructure in keeping up with the sudden influx.

Pema Dorji, a school teacher, pointed out that Tourism is great for the economy, but that the town also need better roads and waste management systems to handle the increased number of visitors.

Meanwhile, Indian tourists shared their admiration for Nganglam’s beauty and the local hospitality.

Rajesh Kumar, a visitor from Assam, noted that it is a peaceful place and the people are very welcoming. He added the food, scenery, and the local culture make it a perfect destination for Indian tourists.

The surge in Indian tourists is not only boosting the local economy but also strengthening the bond between India and Bhutan. Tourists from India appreciate the warm hospitality, while local Bhutanese residents welcome the opportunity to share their culture with their neighbors.

With ongoing efforts to improve tourism facilities and promote local culture, Nganglam is set to become a key tourism hub in south-eastern Bhutan.

The growth in tourism is expected to continue, bringing economic benefits and fostering cultural exchange between the people of Bhutan and India.
