In a historic display of friendship and diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India visited Bhutan to join the nation in celebrating the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
The visit, which coincided with this momentous occasion, underscored the deep and enduring relationship between the two neighboring countries.
“PM Modi is a remarkable leader from a great nation, India. He is an extraordinary person and a steadfast friend of Bhutan, and we are truly happy to welcome him today. We extend our deepest appreciation for joining us here on this special occasion,” His Majesty the King said during the address to the nation at the Changlimithang stadium.
India, home to over 1.5 billion people, is widely recognized for its dynamic youth and rapid economic development under the leadership of PM Modi.
“As we all know, India is a vast and diverse country, home to a large and dynamic population—especially a vibrant and capable youth in the world’s largest democracy. Under PM Modi’s leadership, India continues to experience rapid economic growth and is emerging as a leading global power,” His Majesty remarked.
His Majesty highlighted the importance of having a dependable and friendly neighbor, emphasizing that India has consistently demonstrated these qualities.
“For Bhutan, what matters most is to have a dependable neighbour—one that is friendly, trustworthy, and shares with us a common vision for peace, progress, and prosperity.
“We are fortunate that these very qualities define the bond between our two countries,” His Majesty said.
PM Modi, who has held office for nearly 12 years, has maintained a close working relationship with Bhutan.
“We have been honored to work closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I am deeply appreciative of the uninhibited support he has always extended to Bhutan, and to me,” His Majesty stated.
“His presence here today, on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s 70th Birth Anniversary, has touched all our hearts.”
Bhutan-India relations have historically been defined by friendship, cooperation, and shared values.
“Bhutan and India’s relations have always been special—we have always been there for each other. With this special gesture, our friendship has gained even greater depth and meaning,” His Majesty said.
“This relationship between India and Bhutan is of immense importance. Both our countries have invested tremendous time, energy, foresight, and vision—but above all, have nurtured this bond with sensitivity, compassion, and resolve.
“Over the years, it has grown exponentially. From father to son, mother to daughter, it has become an intergenerational relationship—one we are deeply proud of, and one we will continue to value, nurture, and protect for the benefit of both nations.”
Highlighting the reciprocal nature of the bilateral relationship, the His Majesty emphasized India’s unwavering support for Bhutan and Bhutan’s steadfast solidarity with India.
“India has always stood by Bhutan and supported us unconditionally. Likewise, Bhutan stands firmly with India. We share a common destiny,” he said.
Addressing PM Modi, His Majesty expressed his heartfelt gratitude and admiration for the gesture of attending Bhutan’s national celebration.
“Your Excellency, your presence among us today speaks volumes. I am truly at a loss for words—I do not know how to thank you, or how to adequately represent the feelings of my people.
“I know that my people are deeply touched. We are celebrating the Father of our Nation—one of the kindest, greatest, and most extraordinary leaders we have been blessed with.
“Today, we celebrate an important milestone in his life, because his milestone is our milestone, his journey is our journey. We are bound together by love and devotion,” His Majesty said.
Acknowledging the enormous responsibilities carried by the Indian Prime Minister, His Majesty reflected on the significance of this personal and diplomatic gesture.
“Your Excellency, as the leader of a great nation, we can only imagine the enormous responsibility you carry in guiding one and a half billion people. Yet, you still made the time to visit us.
“We deeply respect and trust India, and we hold immense admiration for your leadership. After this visit, we not only respect India; we love India, we love you, and we look forward to an even brighter shared future,” His Majesty said.
The celebrations at Changlimithang were filled with prayers, attended by citizens from all corners of the country.
The presence of India’s Prime Minister added a historic dimension to the festivities, highlighting the importance of Bhutan-India relations not just in terms of diplomacy, but also in shared culture and mutual respect.
