His Majesty Honors Two Exemplary Educators on the 117th National Day

On the 117th National Day, His Majesty the King bestowed the prestigious Kabney and Patang to two distinguished individuals for their outstanding contributions to education.

Wangchuk Namgay from Rukubji, Wangdue Phodrang, and Tshewang Tandin from Khanku, Paro both had made a huge contribution in the field of education.  The awards recognize their lifelong dedication to shaping Bhutan’s education landscape and their enduring commitment to the nation’s development.

Wangchuk Namgay has devoted over 27 years to the education sector, serving in various capacities, including Principal, District Education Officer, and Chief Education Monitoring Officer. Known for his emphasis on holistic education, he has made remarkable strides in enhancing student success across the nation.

In 2018, Wangchuk Namgay transitioned to politics, where he served as the Speaker of the National Assembly. Currently, he holds the position of Director for Student Affairs at the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law.

Reflecting on the honor, Wangchuk Namgay expressed his deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. “It is a huge honor, a time to reflect on what I have been doing and what I need to do. The country is undergoing unprecedented transformation. It is time for all of us to explore how each one of us can become a player in this transformation,” he said.

Highlighting his dedication to service, he added, “Currently, I am serving at JSW School of Law. My plan is to see how I can serve best. Beyond that, I am at the disposal of the nation.”

Wangchuk Namgay’s journey exemplifies a seamless integration of education and leadership, contributing significantly to the nation’s evolving landscape.

Tshewang Tandin has dedicated over four decades to Bhutan’s education system. Throughout his illustrious career he has held several key positions, including Director General of the Department of Adult and Higher Education and Director of School Education.

Currently Tshewang Tandin serves as the President of Royal Thimphu College, where his focus on holistic student development and value-based leadership has earned him widespread respect.

A recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of New England, Australia, Tshewang Tandin is a passionate advocate for Education for Sustainable Development and the philosophy of Gross National Happiness. His efforts have greatly influenced Bhutan’s education policies and practices, fostering resilience and moral integrity among students.

In his remarks, Tshewang Tandin expressed his gratitude and credited his achievements to the collective support of those around him. “I humbly dedicate this recognition to individuals who have inspired and supported me throughout this journey—students and their parents, whose trust and unwavering belief have been a constant source of motivation, as well as colleagues and mentors, whose cooperation and solidarity have enriched my endeavors,” he said.

He further emphasized the shared spirit that drives Bhutan’s progress, noting, “This recognition is not merely a celebration of personal achievement but a testament to the shared spirit and aspiration of everyone who has been part of this long and fulfilling path.”

Drawing inspiration from Bhutan’s visionary monarchy, he stated, “Above all, I draw inspiration from our enlightened kings, whose vision and leadership remind us that service is not merely an act but a sacred duty of every citizen. I owe my gratitude to the Kings and my responsibility to serve the country to the best of my ability.”

The awards conferred on Wangchuk Namgay and Tshewang Tandin highlight Bhutan’s unwavering commitment to honoring individuals who exemplify the values of dedication, resilience, and service.
