The Indian community in Bhutan gathered at the Indian Embassy in Thimphu on 15 August to celebrate the 79th Independence Day of India, marking a significant occasion that underscored the enduring friendship between the two nations. The ceremony, attended by over 1,000 members of the Indian community and Bhutanese friends, combined formal protocol with expressions of goodwill, cultural recognition, and diplomatic symbolism.
On this day the Indian Independence Act 1947 came into effect, transferring legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly. India attained independence following the independence movement noted for largely non- violent resistance and civil disobedience led by Indian National Congress under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
The celebrations commenced with the unfurling of the Indian national flag by Indian Ambassador Sudhakar Dalela, followed by the singing of the national anthem. The flag-hoisting ceremony, a central feature of Independence Day observances worldwide, symbolized India’s hard-earned freedom and the values on which the nation was founded.
During the event, Ambassador Dalela read out the Independence Day message from President Droupadi Murmu. In her message, President Murmu extended warm greetings to all citizens and paid tribute to India’s freedom fighters, whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the country’s independence. She highlighted India’s successful democratic transition, anchored in principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, and drew attention to the nation’s steady economic growth, noting a 6.5% rise in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
President Murmu’s message also emphasized the government’s achievements in social development and national initiatives, including the Bharatmala road development program, the AMRUT urban renewal mission, Jal Jeevan Mission for safe water access, and Ayushman Bharat health coverage. She underscored the transformative impact of these programs on the nation’s infrastructure, healthcare system, and urban development, while also praising India’s leadership in digital technology and artificial intelligence.
The President specifically recognized the contributions of youth, women, and marginalized communities as pivotal drivers of India’s development and empowerment. She reiterated the government’s commitment to zero tolerance for corruption and highlighted national security measures, including Operation Sindoor, as decisive counter-terrorism efforts. Furthermore, she urged citizens to actively participate in environmental protection and respond to climate change, emphasizing collective responsibility as central to national progress. President Murmu concluded her message by extending greetings to the Indian armed forces, judiciary, civil services, officials abroad, and the global Indian diaspora, encouraging all to contribute toward India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Representing His Majesty The King, Gyalpoi Zimpon Dasho Ugyen K. Namgyel attended the event, underscoring the strong bilateral relations between Bhutan and India. Cabinet Secretary Aum Kesang Deki and Foreign Secretary Aum Pema Choden were also present, reflecting the importance of diplomatic ties and collaboration between the two countries.
As a symbolic gesture of goodwill and friendship, Gyalpoi Zimpon presented a Tashi Khadar (ceremonial scarf) to Ambassador Dalela. The exchange highlighted the enduring and exemplary relationship between India and Bhutan, reflecting mutual respect and the shared cultural and diplomatic values that have historically strengthened the ties between the two nations.
Ambassador Dalela, addressing the gathering, remarked, “This day not only commemorates India’s hard-won freedom but also the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan, built on mutual respect and shared values.” His statement underscored the significance of the event not only as a national celebration but also as a reaffirmation of diplomatic cooperation, people-to-people connections, and regional harmony.
The festivities in Thimphu were part of a global observance, with Indian mission worldwide marking the 79th Independence Day through various events and cultural programs. Across the world, Indian communities gathered to celebrate the occasion with flag hoisting, speeches, and cultural performances, reinforcing a shared sense of national identity and pride among Indians abroad.
