On the occasion of Bhutan’s 117th National Day, His Majesty The King conferred the prestigious National Order of Merit (Silver) to two exemplary figures who have significantly shaped Bhutan’s cultural and artistic landscape—Choeying Jatsho, founder and creative director of M-Studio, and Charmi Chheda, a storyteller and creative director.
Choeying Jatsho, a trailblazer in Bhutan’s modern music industry, was recognized for his transformative impact through M-Studio, a platform that has pioneered B-Pop and contributed to the RAP Revolution in Bhutan. Since its inception, M-Studio has produced state-of-the-art music that nurtures and elevates local talents, creating an indelible mark on the nation’s musical identity.
Reflecting on the honor, Choeying Jatsho expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. “I am the founder and creative director of M-Studio. I produce music, and I have been coordinating the National Day concerts since 2021. No words can express how much this means to me and everyone who is and has been a part of M-Studio,” he shared.
He highlighted the significance of the award not just for him but for all aspiring dreamers in Bhutan. “This recognition is for all dreamers who commit to anything with their full heart. I consider myself a musician, and if a commoner musician like me could be bestowed with recognition like this, it is very much possible for everyone else,” he added.
Charmi Chheda, a creative director, playwright, and choreographer, was honored for her contributions to Bhutan’s performing arts and cultural storytelling. Since moving to Bhutan from India in 2014, she has been instrumental in shaping artistic productions, including National Day performances and state visit events. Her work has enriched Bhutanese storytelling and showcased the nation’s unique cultural identity on prestigious platforms.
Sharing her thoughts on the recognition, she said, “I’m primarily a storyteller and passionate about the arts! Ever since I moved to Bhutan, I’ve been involved in various creative projects, from state visit shows and National Day celebrations to theater and films. I worked with the Royal Government of Bhutan for almost six years and have partnered with institutions such as Samuh, BBS, RTA, YDF, RENEW, UN, and others.”
She described the award as a deeply emotional moment, saying, “I’m emotional and overwhelmed. This award is precious and sacrosanct! It has given me confidence and a bigger sense of purpose, or rather a clear direction of my way forward. I’m forever grateful to His Majesty The King, my inspiration!”
Both recipients expressed their aspirations to continue elevating Bhutanese arts and culture. For Choeying Jatsho, the focus remains on inspiring and nurturing talents through M-Studio, which he envisions as a hub for creativity and innovation.
“This award has reinforced my belief in the power of dedication and passion. At M-Studio, we aim to continue producing music that speaks to the soul and inspires generations,” he said.
Charmi Chheda, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of quality and innovation in her artistic endeavors. “I want to continue producing high-quality works. My focus is to always innovate and showcase theater arts of supreme quality while giving a platform to new talents.”
She also shared her perspective on life and purpose, saying, “Let action and work speak for itself! Wake up each day, as it’s a new chance to live, to give, and to do better. Life without purpose and direction is like a body without a mind. To live a full, purposeful life should be the main objective.”
The recognition of Choeying Jatsho and Charmi Chheda highlights their contributions to Bhutanese music and performing arts. Their dedication to their crafts and their vision for nurturing local talent embody the spirit of innovation and creativity that His Majesty The King continues to inspire.
