TEDxThimphu 2026 returned after nearly a decade, bringing together local and international voices in Thimphu under the theme “Gross Global Inspiration.”
The event featured 11 speakers from eight countries, aiming to connect Bhutan’s development philosophy with global conversations on sustainability, leadership, and human wellbeing.
Organized under license from TED, the independently run TEDx platform focused on sharing “Ideas Worth Spreading,” with this year’s edition highlighting Bhutan’s unique approach to development through Gross National Happiness (GNH).
The event’s theme drew directly from Bhutan’s longstanding philosophy, first introduced by His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, which emphasizes holistic wellbeing over economic growth.
Organizers said the theme reflects a continuation of that vision in a modern global context marked by environmental challenges, inequality, and social fragmentation.
According to TEDx Thimphu organizer Dorji Dhradhul, the concept of “Gross Global Inspiration” expands on the principles of GNH by encouraging a shift in global priorities.
He said Bhutan’s earlier contribution to development thinking challenged the dominance of economic indicators, and the new theme seeks to further promote values such as mindfulness, compassion, and ecological balance.
He explained that in a world facing multiple crises, Bhutan’s philosophy remains highly relevant, offering an alternative perspective that prioritizes harmony and collective wellbeing.
Further, he added that the initiative aims to inspire a broader global mindset focused on peace, sustainability, and humane progress, while reinforcing Bhutan’s belief that even a small nation can influence global discourse.
The event also aimed to strengthen connections between Bhutanese ideas and international perspectives. Speakers and participants from countries including Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States joined Bhutanese voices in discussions designed to bridge local wisdom with global insights.
Dorji Dhradhul said TEDxThimphu serves as a platform for exchange, where ideas originating in Bhutan can reach global audiences.
He highlighted collaborations with international partners such as TEDxMarvila in Portugal and TEDxNCIT in Nepal, along with support from national institutions and private sector partners, as part of a broader effort to position Bhutan as a hub for meaningful dialogue.
He noted that the impact of the event is expected to extend beyond the venue through recorded talks shared worldwide.
He also added the goal is not only to promote Bhutan as a destination but also as a source of ideas, where global thinkers can engage with Bhutanese perspectives and carry those insights forward.
The discussions at TEDxThimphu 2026 also aligned with Bhutan’s ongoing transformation through national initiatives such as the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a project envisioned by His Majesty the King.
The initiative represents a future-oriented approach that integrates economic development with spiritual and environmental values.
Dorji Dhradhul stated that while projects like GMC are shaping Bhutan’s physical and economic future, platforms like TEDxThimphu contribute to shaping its intellectual and philosophical presence on the global stage.
He said the event creates a space for sharing and discussing ideas that combine innovation with mindfulness, positioning Bhutan as a place where development serves both people and nature.
Participants at the event echoed similar sentiments about the significance of Bhutan’s development philosophy.
Tshering Lhamo, a college student from Norbu Rigter College, said she was drawn to the event by its emphasis on meaningful ideas and shared learning.
She said the theme resonated with her belief that inspiration should be a fundamental part of progress, not just an abstract concept.
She added that prioritizing collective wellbeing and creativity often leads to more sustainable and meaningful outcomes.
Reflecting on Bhutan’s global influence, Tshering Lhamo said the country offers an alternative framework for development that balances modernization with cultural and environmental preservation.
She identified three key areas where Bhutan’s approach could influence global thinking: redefining success in terms of wellbeing, recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental and cultural systems, and promoting a more mindful approach to growth and technology.
She added that Bhutan’s model provides a pathway for a more balanced and compassionate future, particularly at a time when many societies are grappling with fragmentation and rapid change.
Among the international speakers, Malaysian mountaineer Kah Shin Leow shared his experiences and highlighted the importance of humility and preparedness.
He expressed appreciation for being part of the event in Bhutan and said she hoped to use her platform to support and inspire schoolchildren and others in need.
The event took place against the broader backdrop of Bhutan’s evolving national vision, which includes initiatives such as the Gelephu Mindfulness City and other programs aimed at fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and civic responsibility.
Organizers noted that TEDxThimphu 2026 coincides with Bhutan’s ongoing reflection on its development journey, particularly as the country continues to promote GNH as a guiding principle in both national policy and global engagement.
Held at the Royal University of Bhutan, the event leveraged the institution’s role as a center for learning and intellectual exchange.
The university, which brings together students from across the country, provided a setting for dialogue that combined academic inquiry with practical ideas.
By hosting TEDxThimphu 2026, the university created a platform for discussions that extend beyond the classroom, encouraging participants to question, innovate, and engage with global issues through a Bhutanese lens.
As the event concluded, organizers reiterated their aim to ensure that the ideas shared during the conference continue to reach wider audiences.
Through digital platforms and global networks, TEDxThimphu 2026 is expected to contribute to ongoing conversations about sustainable development, mindful leadership, and the role of values in shaping the future.
The event underscored Bhutan’s continuing effort to position itself not only as a country of natural beauty, but also as a source of ideas that address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
