From forgotten hills to glaring spotlights

The inspirational story of Leela Rai, Dorokha’s rising star

RENUKA RAI | Thimphu

Leela Rai’s journey begins in the quiet hills of Dorokha in Samtse, where opportunities are limited and life is shaped by simplicity and resilience.

Raised in a humble rural family, Leela grew up understanding responsibility from an early age. Her father, a farmer, worked tirelessly to provide for the family, while her mother despite having no formal education became her strongest emotional support.

As the only daughter among three brothers, Leela’s childhood was grounded in both care and quiet expectations.

But life took a turning point when her mother passed away. The loss left a deep emotional gap and brought new responsibilities into her life.

“My late mother was my quiet strength and biggest support,” Leela says.

After her passing, she found herself trying to stay strong not only for herself but also for her father and brothers. It was a period of grief, adjustment, and growing maturity one that shaped her perspective on life.

Her education was also affected during this time. Leela had once dreamed of continuing her studies and experiencing college life, but circumstances did not allow her to go beyond Grade 10.

Financial challenges and family responsibilities forced her to step away from formal education, leaving her at a crossroads. For many, such a moment could feel like the end of possibilities. For Leela, it became the beginning of a different path one she would create for herself.

Before stepping into content creation, Leela had already begun exploring her passion for performance. “I started my journey with reality shows, Super Talent Season 1 and Your Voice Kalapingka Season 1, not knowing where they would lead me,” she recalls.

These platforms gave her the courage to step out of her comfort zone and share her talent with a wider audience. Competing among many participants, she reached the Top 10 in singing an achievement that boosted her confidence and opened new doors.

Those early experiences laid the foundation for her creative journey. “From reaching the Top 10 in singing to getting small roles in Bhutanese films, every step has been meaningful,” she says.

While the roles she received were not always prominent, she never underestimated their importance. “I never doubted myself, even when the roles were small,” she adds.

Each opportunity became a stepping stone, helping her learn, grow, and gain confidence in her abilities.

One of the most memorable milestones in her journey was the opportunity to travel beyond Bhutan. “I even got the chance to travel to Nepal to work on a music video,” she shares.

For someone who grew up in a rural village with limited exposure, this experience was more than just work it was a moment of growth, exploration, and realization of how far she had come.

At the same time, Leela was discovering another powerful outlet content creation. Unlike her earlier experiences in structured platforms, this space allowed her complete freedom.

“I started content creation as a way to express parts of myself that I couldn’t always say out loud,” she adds. It became a personal space where she could share emotions, thoughts, and stories without filters.

Her motivation came from connection. “What inspired me most was the feeling of being able to connect with others knowing that something I create might make someone feel seen, understood, or even a little less alone,” she says.

This purpose continues to guide her work, making her content more than just entertainment it becomes a shared experience.

Leela’s content stands out for its raw and unfiltered nature. In a world where many creators focus on perfection, she chooses authenticity.

“My content is mostly raw, and I believe that’s what makes it unique. I don’t edit much I prefer to share things as they are,” she says.

This honesty resonates deeply with her audience, allowing them to see not just her work, but her true self.

Like many creators, her journey has not been without challenges. One of her biggest struggles was maintaining consistency.

“I struggled with consistency,” she admits. “I overcame it by focusing on my own voice and creating without overthinking.”

By letting go of the pressure to be perfect, she found her rhythm and began to grow more confidently.

Today, her content serves both emotional and practical purposes. “I’m proud that my content now helps me earn through promotions, and it also helps me relieve stress by creating videos,” she says.

What started as a personal outlet has now become a source of income, reflecting the growing opportunities within Bhutan’s digital space.

Nonetheless, despite being aware of trends, Leela remains grounded in her own perspective.

“I don’t always follow trends though I do keep up with popular ones but mostly, I focus on sharing my own perspective,” she explains.

Her rural background continues to shape her content. “My background plays a big role it shapes how I see things and how I express myself. It keeps my content grounded and real.”

Handling criticism has also been part of her growth. In a digital world where opinions come quickly and often harshly, Leela has learned to stay focused.

“I take what’s useful and ignore the rest. I’ve learned not to give energy to things that don’t help me grow,” she says. This mindset has helped her stay consistent and true to herself.

Her daily routine reflects the dedication behind her work thinking of ideas, shooting content, editing, and managing promotions. “It keeps me busy, but I enjoy it,” she says, showing her commitment to the journey she has chosen.

Looking ahead, Leela sees a promising future for digital creators in Bhutan. “I see a very positive future for digital content in Bhutan. It’s growing fast and giving young creators a real platform to express themselves, earn, and build careers,” she says.

At the same time, she acknowledges that with growth comes competition, making it important for creators to stay original and persistent.

Beyond social media, Leela has bigger ambitions. “I want to build a stable career from my creativity and explore opportunities that bring long-term growth and impact,” she shares.

She hopes to eventually create something meaningful—possibly a business—that can support her financially while allowing her to continue her creative journey.

One of her most significant projects is Dear Tshogyel, where she plays the role of Janu. The character carries deep emotional weight, portraying a woman who suffers in silence and is pushed into difficult circumstances.

“It is a deeply emotional and touching narrative, and I believe the audience will truly connect with it,” Leela says. Through this role, she is stepping into more powerful storytelling, reflecting real struggles and human emotions.

Looking back, Leela sees her journey not just in terms of success, but in perseverance. From a rural village to reality shows, from small acting roles to digital platforms, every step has shaped her growth.

“Today, I see progress and I’m proud that I didn’t give up. Dreams do come true when you keep going,” she says.

Her message to others is simple yet meaningful: “Just start. Don’t wait for perfection or the right moment. Be consistent, stay real, find your own style, and don’t compare your journey with others.”

Leela Rai’s story is one of quiet strength, authenticity, and determination. From the hills of Dorokha to the expanding world of digital content, she continues to move forward proving that even the smallest beginnings can lead to something powerful.
