The 14th Bhutan Construction and Wood Expo 2026 has opened as a major industry showcase, bringing together government leaders, private sector actors, and regional exhibitors to spotlight technologies and innovations shaping the country’s construction and wood sectors.

Held from May 7 to 11 under the theme “Towards Growth and Advancement of the Construction and Wood Sectors of Bhutan,” the expo features more than 90 companies from Bhutan and India, displaying advanced machinery, building materials, electrical equipment, and modern woodworking technologies across over 100 stalls.

The event is being positioned as a key platform for collaboration, investment, and knowledge exchange in two sectors central to Bhutan’s development agenda.

Lyonpo Gyem Tshering, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, said the expo comes at a critical juncture for Bhutan’s development trajectory.

“At a very important time for Bhutan as our country advances towards economic transformation and infrastructure modernisation under the 13th Five-Year Plan, the construction sector and wood-based industries will play a critical role in driving sustainable growth, employment generation, innovation, and private sector development,” Lyonpo said.

He stressed that the construction sector remains one of the key pillars of national development, underpinning infrastructure such as roads, bridges, hydropower projects, schools, hospitals, irrigation systems, and urban facilities.

“Every road, bridge, hydro project, school, hospital, irrigation system, industrial estate, and urban infrastructure depends upon the strength and efficiency of this sector,” he added.

The minister also highlighted the importance of modernisation and mechanisation in the industry, noting that advanced building materials and construction technologies are now essential rather than optional.

“Modern construction equipment, advanced building materials, innovative technologies are therefore no longer optional. They are essential requirements for building resilient, efficient, and future-ready infrastructure for the nation,” he said.

He further added that the expo supports Bhutan’s broader development priorities, including economic revitalisation, industrial development, green growth, and youth employment under the 13th Five-Year Plan.

Meanwhile, Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) President Tandy Wangchukdescribed the expo as a “vibrant marketplace for ideas and innovation” that has evolved significantly over the years.

“The Bhutan Construction and Wood Expo has grown into one of the most important platforms for industry engagement in our country. What initially started as a modest initiative has now become a vibrant marketplace for ideas, innovations and collaboration,” the president said.

He noted that the expo plays a key role in facilitating business networking, technology transfer, and market linkages between Bhutanese and international stakeholders, particularly from India.

According to him, Bhutan’s timber and wood-based industries also hold strong potential for value addition, rural employment, import substitution, and export diversification, with emerging opportunities in engineered wood products, furniture manufacturing, bamboo products, veneer, plywood, prefabricated housing materials, and eco-friendly construction materials.

The BCCI president also emphasised the importance of quality standards and certification, stating that imported products must comply with Bhutan Standards Bureau (BSB) requirements to ensure safety and durability.

He further highlighted growing Bhutan–India business cooperation under South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAFTA), noting that exhibitions such as this help strengthen trade linkages and private sector growth.

Industry participants say the expo reflects Bhutan’s ongoing transition towards a more modern, sustainable, and innovation-driven construction ecosystem, while also reinforcing the role of cross-border collaboration in supporting economic development.

As Bhutan advances its development agenda, the expo underscores a clear policy direction: building a modern, competitive, and sustainable construction and wood-based industry capable of supporting long-term economic resilience.
